Sabir Muhammad

Muhammad is a retired American swimmer who broke 10 American records and earned 22 international medals throughout his career. Muhammad is distinguished as the first African-American to hold an American record for the USA. He was an NCAA Champion at Stanford University and a member of the Team USA’s Pan-Am and Pan Pacific Teams.
Muhammad is a marketer, investor, children’s book author, husband and parent. Muhammad currently serves on the board of USA Swimming.

Swimmer: The Beginning

Muhammad’s first experience with water nearly resulted in disaster. After nearly drowning Muhammad’s parents enrolled him in swimming lessons in the City of Atlanta. Shortly after he joined a swim team that would become the City of Atlanta Dolphines. Read an excerpt of his experiences as a young swimmer here.

A Champion Emerges

After graduating high school, Muhammad joined Stanford University as its first African-American full scholarship swimmer. During his time at Stanford Muhammad led Stanford to multiple American records, NCAA champships, and Pac 10 championships. Muhammad graduated as an NCAA Academic All-American. Giving Back to the Sport

After completing a storied career and blazing a trail as the first African-American man to hold an American swimming record, Muhammad is focused on using swimming as an instrument to change lives. He is currently a member of USA Swimming’s board of directors and he is focused on driving diversity throughout the sport’s membership. Muhammad needs your help to drive this change. Currently, Muhammad and USA Swimming need volunteers with the following skillsets: grant writing, community organizing, strategy consulting and digital transformation.
